Elegant Zambian Victoria Falls Beach Wedding | The River Club & Tongabezi | Livingstone, Zambia
Earlier this year I traveled to Zambia to attend a family wedding and much to my excitement and nerves – to document it too. It was the first wedding that I have ever photographed and after hearing some of the details that the bride had in store, I knew I was in for a photographic treat. A wedding on an island in the middle of the Zambezi River a few miles upstream from the mighty Victoria Falls, one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. A blend of traditional Zambian culture with Danish charm right in the heart of Africa.
The bride got ready at Tongabezi, a luxury river camp on the banks of the Zambezi River. Her room was a beautiful wooden deck built into the natural rocks along the river and surrounded by tall shady trees. While doing the getting ready images, the camp staff gave us an air gun to keep the pesky monkey’s at bay. I thought it was unnecessary, but when the platter of watermelons got ambushed by a troop of monkeys, I knew why I made a quick dash to The River Club, which was right next door to document the guests arriving and making their unexpected short journey by boat to an island for the wedding ceremony. Here they were greeted by the sound of a marimba band and a tangible feeling of excitement in the air.
The ceremony happened just over an hour before sunset, perfectly timed to capture Africa’s beautiful golden light at sunset. It was beautiful to witness what can happen when a team of creative people come together and make something beautiful happen. The mother of the groom transformed buckets full of both bought and wild flowers into bouquets, boutineers and long ropes of flowers. The delicious wedding cake was made by the mother of the bride using Mwinilunga pineapples, simply scrumptious! Kaajal Vaghela did the bride’s makeup in arguably one of the best spots on the Zambezi.
It’s been an emotional process editing the images and reliving the precious moments of the day. Watching two beautiful people get married and the response that this creates in the people witnessing this act of commitment is a reminder of how great love is.
