International Day of Yoga | Providenciales, Turks & Caicos
About a month ago I put it out there that I wanted to give back to the community in Turks & Caicos and the theme of yoga felt like the right place to offer this contribution. So about two weeks ago when I got an email from David Bowen seeking help in putting together an event to celebrate International Day of Yoga here in Turks & Caicos, I knew that this was my answer.
21 June, 2015, summer solstice, was declared as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations General Assembly on 11 December, 2014. On Sunday I had the pleasure of documenting the first of many International Day of Yoga celebrations which was held at the Graceway Sports Center from 2-6pm.
David Bowen along with some of the local Turks & Caicos Yoga Community (Laura & Lindsay Mensen from Retreat Yoga & Wellness Studio, Kim Mortimer from Island Synergy and Sushil Kumar & Sister Padma from Brahma Kumaris Meditation Centre) and my lovely husband, Edward Shearer, from Shearer Martial Arts, bringing a tai chi element to the day, led the lectures and classes.
The event was free and open to all people regardless of age, race, color, religion, creed or ability and involved a range of lectures covering postures, breathing, meditation, diet and lifestyle information. My four year old daughter attended about an hour of the event and it was so precious witnessing her taking in the experience of a group of people sharing the practice of yoga. She has seen me doing yoga at home and when we lived in England we went to a few yoga classes for kids, however this had a completely different quality to it.
I hope that next year we will have more people attending the event, sharing and learning about the many beautiful qualities that yoga offers us. If you are interested in attending the event next year, for further information, please contact TCIYC3@gmail.com or call (649) 432-5278.
